One of the things I like about decorating the outside of my home is using unexpected items some people wouldn’t put outside. I’ve lived in our new home for a few years now and I’ve quickly learned I’ve had a harder time decorating this space then I have any other places I’ve lived (and that’s been a lot.) I think I’ve come up with the answer to why that is, I’ve always lived in fixer-uppers and was never afraid to take risk decorating because if I messed up it didn’t matter it was usually ugly to begin with and any change was probably for the best.
That leads me to decorating our backyard. I tend to gravitate to older things and I like to use furniture some people would only use inside. I think using indoor furniture outside makes the space feel cozier.
This is a table I picked up at a thrift store a few years ago and paid peanuts for it. With some paint and a quick tightening of the screws underneath, it was good as new and if it gets ruined I can always re-paint it and if it eventually falls apart I’m not really bummed.
You also don’t need fancy flowers. The greenery in my little bird was just some branches I snipped from the yard.
I’m sure they are out of style by now but I still am in love with owls. They remind me of my grandma for some reason. If you look at the photos you’ll see a few owls and a bird in the small space. Remember to bring your collections together, it works.
The wine bottle was given to me by one of my best friends and my daughter’s Godmother and reminds me of our fun evening. I filled it with oil and added a wick and a hurricane on top and it makes a great outdoor light source now!
So don’t be afraid to use furniture you’d normally use inside and decorate your outdoor space like you would your inside space.
