One of our last projects of the summer season of 2011 was our water feature. You can read about it here.
This is what it looked like last summer…
(Wow, green grass! Not really sure what that is this summer because of the lack of rain!)
This year Drew decided to finish up the area and do some landscaping. This is our first time doing any major plant and flower purchases. Prior to this all of our homes were quite old and the landscaping was done except a few flowers we planted here and there.
We decided to follow my daughter’s Aunt Liz’s advice (her landscaping is always beautiful) she gave us last year and that was to pick flowers and plants according to whether the area is sunny, shady or a little of both and after that pick what you love and if it doesn’t work then plant it somewhere else. Don’t over think it!
So off to the nursery we went. We wanted the space to be colorful but not too crazy so we stuck with three colors and greenery, we also chose things that varied in height.
(Our first trip to the nursery, as you can see we were planting in a sunny area.)
Prior to planting all our new flowers and shrubs we placed the pots all over the water feature area and moved them around until we liked how it looked and after that Drew proceeded to plant them all.
I love the result!
As you can see our grass is barely holding on this year, it was just our luck the year we landscape we end up going through one of the worst droughts in Indianapolis history, which meant lots of watering to keep our new plants alive.
Of course I shouldn’t say it hasn’t rained in Indy, it did rain for 15 minutes last Thursday and along with the rain came a massive wind storm which resulted in this happening to my outdoor coffee table.
Come back tomorrow and see what I replaced my broken coffee table with, I’m actually sorta glad this one broke!!

I love the advice she gave you. I also chose a bad year for landscaping. I ripped out almost everything from my front and side bed and planted all new. Now I’m on constant watering duty. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some rain today.
Maybe we can do a water dance…I’m sure my water bill would appreciate a break!
