I bought an Ethan Allen dresser over a year ago and it’s been sitting in my garage. I paid about $100.00 for the dresser. This is usually a little more then I spend when I’m out thrifting but think about it, if you were to buy something new for $100.00 this is probably what you’d get.
The Malm 4 drawer dresser from Ikea, cool dresser yes, any real wood used…not so much.
So my tip to you when you’re thrifting is not everything is going to be a couple of bucks or the deal of a lifetime but remind yourself of the quality of the piece and if you could ever buy a piece new at that price.
The Ethan Allen dresser is probably the most well built furniture I’ve ever bought, not a stitch of fake wood on the entire piece. The only problem is the piece it’s from the 70′s and even though the photo doesn’t look so bad it actually is very ugly in person so a makeover is in order.
I had a coupon at Home Depot so I decided to use it for paint and hardware for the dresser. The paint is going to be Glidden onyx black in eggshell and the hardware is Martha Stewart’s Living bedford brass awning cup hardware pull that was a steal for $1.98 a piece.
It’s taking me a bit longer to get going on the piece though, my daughter starts 9th grade today (so lots of school shopping and hair and eyebrow doing) and I failed my glucose test last week so the personal front took precedence over the dresser makeover.
Wish me luck, I’m going to the doctor’s today to do a longer 3 hour gestational diabetes test. How come when you’re told you can’t eat all you want to do is eat????
I’ll be back this week with progress on week one of the nursery makeover!
