Summer Pest Control in London: Ants, Wasps, and What to Do

As temperatures rise, pests become more active. London homes and gardens attract ants, wasps, and insects looking for food, water, and shelter. These pests thrive in warm conditions and can quickly disrupt daily life. Understanding how to spot, prevent, and control infestations is key to avoiding problems as summer unfolds.

Ants: Persistent Invaders Indoors and Out

Ants enter properties in search of sugar, grease, and protein. The most common species in London homes are black garden ants and pharaoh ants. Black ants usually enter through cracks in brickwork, gaps in windows, or under doors. Pharaoh ants are smaller, harder to control, and often nest in warm indoor spaces like under floors or inside walls. Once ants locate a food source, they leave behind a chemical trail for others to follow. Within hours, a few scouts become hundreds. Kitchens, bin areas, and pet feeding zones are the usual hotspots. During dry spells, ants also search for water, heading for sinks, baths, and leaking pipes.

    To manage ant problems:

    • Seal gaps around windows, doors, and skirting boards
    • Keep worktops, floors, and bins clean and dry
    • Store food in sealed containers
    • Avoid leaving pet food out for long periods

If ant activity continues, call a specialist in pest control in London who can identify the nest location and apply targeted treatment.

    Wasps: Aggressive and Unpredictable

Wasps are most active from mid-summer through early autumn. They build nests in lofts, sheds, wall cavities, and under eaves. Unlike bees, wasps can sting repeatedly and become hostile when threatened. Their numbers peak during late summer, often leading to increased aggression as they scavenge for sugary food and drink.

Common signs of a wasp nest:

Frequent wasp traffic in and out of the same hole

    • Buzzing sounds behind walls or in the loft
    • Visual confirmation of a paper-like structure in sheltered spots

Never attempt to remove a wasp nest yourself. Wasps attack in swarms when disturbed. Only trained professionals should handle the removal using protective equipment and suitable insecticides.

    To deter wasps:

    • Cover bins tightly and empty them regularly
    • Avoid leaving food or sweet drinks uncovered outdoors
    • Fit mesh screens on open windows and doors
    • Inspect sheds and lofts regularly during spring and early summer

    Prevention: Consistency Is Key

Preventative steps work best when maintained throughout the season. Cleanliness inside the home is essential. Wipe down surfaces, sweep floors, and don’t leave food or waste exposed. Outside, trim overgrown vegetation and remove fallen fruit or compost that can attract insects. Install insect mesh on vents and air bricks. Repair broken roof tiles and seal gaps where pipes or wires enter the home. These entry points offer easy access for insects during the warmer months. Garden furniture, play areas, and outdoor dining spaces should be checked for signs of nests or insect activity before use. Wasps often build nests in areas that go unnoticed until they’re disturbed.

    Professional Help for Persistent Problems

DIY methods may offer short-term relief but rarely address the source. When infestations grow, or pests keep returning, professional treatment becomes necessary. Reputable companies offering pest control in London use safe, approved methods tailored to the property and pests involved. Technicians also provide advice to prevent re-infestation after treatment. Professional inspections identify hidden nests or colonies, apply targeted solutions, and ensure full removal with minimal disruption to your home or routine.
